Pool surrounds and outdoor tiling in Brisbane
Pool surrounds and coping, courtyards, verandahs, patios and external stairs. Laid to fall, in tile rated for the weather and for wet feet, and detailed to sit right against fencing, coping and handrails.
Outside is a different job
External tiling is not internal tiling done in the sun. The tile has to be rated for the exposure, the slip rating has to suit an area people walk on with wet feet, the falls have to actually shed water away from the building, and the whole thing has to cope with a slab that expands and contracts far more than one inside.
That last part is where most outdoor tiling fails. Without movement joints in the right places, a big paved area in a Brisbane summer will lift itself off the slab.
Pool surrounds and coping
Coping is the detail everyone looks at and the hardest part to get right — the overhang, the drip edge, the junction to the waterline tile and the way the surround falls away from the pool rather than into it. Around that, the surround has to sit level with the glass fencing and land cleanly at the gates.
The gallery has pool jobs both mid-build and finished, including surrounds paired with dry-stack stone feature walls.
Verandahs, patios and stairs
Verandah and patio floors, outdoor dining areas, courtyards with turf insets, external stairs and ramps with handrails. Anywhere outside that gets walked on, and in Queensland that is most of the house.

Questions
Pool surrounds and outdoor tiling — questions.
What tile can go around a pool?
An external-rated tile with a slip rating suited to a wet area underfoot, in a finish that does not get too hot to stand on. Plenty of porcelain now comes in a matching internal and external finish, so you can run the same look from the living room out to the pool.
Do you do the coping as well as the paving?
Yes. Coping and surround are one job — the overhang, the drip edge and the fall away from the pool all have to work together, and splitting them between two trades is how you get a lip at the join.
Can you tile over existing concrete or pavers?
Over sound concrete usually yes, subject to what the extra height does to your door thresholds and step heights. Over existing pavers it depends entirely on how they are bedded — we check on the measure.
Why does outdoor tiling crack when indoor tiling does not?
Because the slab underneath it moves far more with temperature. The fix is movement joints in the right places and a bedding system that allows for it. Skipping those is the single most common cause of a lifted external floor.
